Metrolink CPO Progress

With the recent approval by An Coimisiún Pleanála of the MetroLink project, the focus of Transport Infrastructure Ireland has now turned to the procurement process. In November 2025 the Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, established a dedicated MetroLink delivery body. Attention has understandably turned to the compulsory purchase process given that Notice to Treat documents are expected to be served on impacted landowners early in 2026. This depends on whether or not Judicial Review proceedings are taken against An Coimisiún Pleanála’s decision.
A total of 189 hectares (467 acres) of land lies within the project boundary. Approximately 97 hectares (239 acres) is set to be acquired on a permanent basis to include sub-stratum to facility tunnelling. The scheme will involve the acquisition of 85 residential units and numerous commercial buildings, primarily to facilitate the construction of stations. One example is the College Gate apartment development at Townsend Street. It is due to be compulsorily acquired in its entirety to facilitate the Tara Station.
The service of Notice to Treat documents on individual landowners will be an important milestone. It effectively invites the landowner to submit a claim for compensation in respect of the land/interest being acquired from them.
