Student Internship Diary – Diarmuid Kilroy, Professional Services Team
I am currently studying Property Economics and Valuation Surveying at TU Dublin, Bolton Street. In November 2024, I was delighted to accept an internship position offered to me by Bannon Property Consultants in the Professional Services.
I had first heard of Bannon due to their strong presence in the retail sector and their ongoing and visible support of our training at TU. It was at the TU Dublin Careers Fair where I met Managing Director, Paul Doyle, and I gained insight into the wide range of services they offer. After further research, I felt that Bannon struck the perfect balance between being large enough to offer meaningful, large scale projects, real-world experience and structured mentorship, yet still agile enough to provide hands-on learning, direct access to senior professionals, and a genuine sense of involvement in ongoing projects.
Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of tasks, from attending site visits and client meetings to researching developments, reviewing planning permissions, and assisting with valuation reports. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic mix of desk and field-based work, which kept each day fresh and engaging. From the get-go I felt welcome in Bannon and in addition to the rewarding work I also particularly enjoyed the regular social events which gave me an opportunity to mix with colleagues outside the work environment.
My colleagues in Professional Services understood that this was a pathway for me to gain an insight into the reality of working in the Dublin commercial property market while learning the skills required along the way. The directors and surveyors in my team and throughout the whole company made me feel welcome and helped me along the way.
Having completed my 15 week internship with Bannon, I was happy to accept an offer to continue in the role over summer 2025, and part-time during my final year in TU Dublin
